FREQUENT FLYERS #3 – NAMIBIA

Namibia was the third (and last) stop of our paragliding journey.

I was dreaming about this country for a longtime: dreaming of the red sand dunes for sure, but also of the atmosphere of Southern Africa, the people and the huge wildlife that is living here. Our idea was mainly to fly on the west coast. By chance, we met Axel Gruber, a local pilot who flies in Swakopmund. Axel knows all the places very well, and he kindly drove us from spot to spot. Here is the first one: Sandwich Harbour

SANDWICH

Sandwich is a huge coast line, a desert that goes right into the Atlantic ocean.

SANDWICH

The dunes here are steep… pretty steep!! Actually I have never seen a steepness like this, at least 30° for sure. At the beginning, I was even a bit confused to do some waggas… but after a while I could manage to get closer from the sand. ;-)

The scenery is just perfect. We were alone with Perrine and Axel, flying all day long, between the sea and the desert.

SWAKOPMUND

The spot near Swakopmund, located at doors of the desert, has the advantage to be very accessible, even without a 4×4.

SWAKOPMUND

The morning, you will have to wait that the fog from the sea is clearing up… and then comes the breeze!

DEADVLEI

One of the spot I have been dreaming to go in Namibia is Deadvlei, 300km south of Swakopmund. Flying above those petrified trees was really challenging for me. Even if the location is not very good to fly, the ambiance here is just unbelievable.

But Sossusvlei is not only about Deadvlei. This long corridor gathers also many red sand dunes, facing the same direction, with a strong venturi in the middle. We are in the middle of the Namib desert!!…

You have to be patient to wait until late that the wing calms down. But then, the magic happens.

You could even take-off from any dune in the corridor, and jump from one to an other. Here, Perrine is cruising with her GEO4 XS.

The sun is getting down, but the wind stays strong. You can then enjoy the crazy sunset in Sossusvlei valley!!!

And this is the end of our adventures. It’s now time for us to come back to France. I hope you enjoyed our trip and you’ll be motivated to bring your glider when you will travel…. There is paragliding spots everywhere in the world!!
